A One-Day Seminar focusing on the use of a Family Systems Approach to congregational leadership.

Thursday, March 21, 2013

10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch included onsite for $5 per person

Facilitators

Rev. Carol Jeunnette, Ph.D., Licensed Professional Counselor, Bridgebuilder, Healthy Congregations Facilitator/Trainer of Facilitators, postgraduate work at the Center for Family Process (Edwin Friedman) and Bowen Center for the Study of the Family.

Bishop Jim Hazelwood, D.Min. all around nice guy and sometime troublemaker, Intern Ackerman institute for Family Therapy, NYC, postgraduate work with Edwin Friedman 1990-1993.

Seminar: The purpose of this seminar is to provide a foundation in systems thinking. The intent is to help clergy explore the relationship between their own family of origin, the families in their congregation and congregation as a whole/family. Jim will focus more on the leadership aspect of leading a congregation, while Carol will emphasize seeing relational dynamics through the lens of concepts of Bowen Family Systems Theory and Friedman’s work with the theory.

Expectations & Covenant: While there is no fee for this event, except for lunch and your own travel costs, there is an expectation that all participants will agree to the following:

1. Read two of Edwin Friedman’s books: Generation to Generation & A Failure of Nerve. These are the foundational texts and required.

2. View Peter Steinke’s presentation The Balancing Act: The Congregation as a healthy Emotional System. This presentation is available online at the link below. It is in five parts and totals several hours. Therefore we suggest you spread the viewing out over the time between now and March 21.
