From Our Pastor – December 2017

The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn; There are tables spread, every mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn My heart shall sing of the day you bring, Let the fires of your justice burn Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn
ELW #723 Canticle of the Turning

Dear Flock of the Shepherd of the Valley,

This Advent you may notice a theme of hunger peeking out of various corners of our life together. The adult discipleship group that meets on Sunday mornings will be using an Advent devotional prepared by the ELCA World Hunger. Our Wednesday evening prayer services will use readings that draw our attention to hunger as we gather for meditative Taizé-style services. Themes of waiting and preparation in our readings on Sundays connect us to a spiritual hunger. Stories in the news of silenced acts of violence are generating a hunger for more to speak their truths. Jesus said, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” – John 7:31-32

Dear Flock of the Shepherd of the Valley,

What does it mean to continue in Jesus’ word? To be Jesus disciples? What is truth? What does it look like to be free?

Answers to these questions (perhaps even more questions that rise out of these questions) are not the same for everyone. It would be much easier if they were. And some of us may have been raised to believe that there is some absolute truth and one way to continue in Jesus’ word. Some of us may equate the freedom of which Jesus speaks with the freedom promised by our nation. I know this is the way I was raised. The combination of voices coming from home and family, church, school, advertisement, media, journalism all culminated in this kind of message: Just believe in Jesus and it will all work out for you. And by “working out” I understood that to mean that I could accomplish anything if I just tried hard enough. Continue reading From Our Pastor – November 2017
